Development at the cost of what??

We are developing at unimaginable rates. But what really goes into development? Do we claim we are developed just because we have increased in number?  World population is going up every minute. We have definitely come a long way in the field of science and technology, medicine, forensic sciences, nautical sciences, astronomy, architecture and what not?

Concrete buildings
But all of the above so called development has taken place resulting in the earth we live in today, a concrete forest! We don't live in individual houses anymore. We would rather live in an apartment where we don't know our neighbors if there are no activities involving everybody in the apartment. We have become emotionally detached and don't care about anything that's going on around us. We have an interesting life online with our social peers rather than actually spend time with them. It has become inevitable to accept the changes, be it positive or negative. We have learnt not to raise our opinions against what we feel is wrong.

“Development is about transforming the lives of people, not just transforming economies.”  It is rightly said, We don't ever see beyond our happiness. We just want all the happiness in the world to be ours. We pray for ourselves and our family members. We must learn to have a heart that is kind enough to help the needy and try and empathize their situation. We do not have to give away all our wealth to the poor out there. But, we can definitely give a part of our money for their well being. It will definitely bring more happiness and bliss to you too.
Over populated city

What has happened to all the beautiful rivers, bird sanctuaries, forests, national reserves? Have you ever wondered?? They have all perished in the journey of human development. We have chopped all the green reserves and have ended up in a world which is filled with plastics and non-bio degradable, toxic wastes everywhere around us. There are too less ways of disposal of these wastes. With the problem becoming more critical everyday we ought to face its consequences. The earth is the only planet said to contain life in it. We have developed so much that all the other living species are in the verge of getting extinct or are critically endangered.

In terms of becoming urbanized we have switched over to various professions and even agriculture has become mechanic. We don't get any physical exercise unless one is determined to do so. We all are struck with the sedentary lifestyle ad want to get things done from the same place. This is going to do no good to us all. We expect others to come bring some changes in the society.

We must tell our friends and neighbors to utilize the resources available to them judiciously so that others who are deprived of them can share the resource amongst us also. We must take imitative in our city and tell the local municipality to collect waste only after separation into bio degradable and non-biodegradable. We must conduct awareness programs about the current situation and make people aware of the consequences we will have to face if we resist to thrust change upon us.

Lets begin today, make a change, for a better tomorrow.

  1. Engage others with respect, understanding and acceptance

Amma addressing United Nations Alliance of Civilizations

    29-30 Nov 2012, Shanghai, China

“When we engage others with respect, understanding and acceptance, then we will be able to communicate at the level of the heart” said Amma in her address at the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations’ (UNAOC) Regional Consultations for Asia-South Pacific, being held in Shanghai.

Renowned humanitarian and spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma) delivered an address on 29-11-2012, as one of the speakers at the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations' (UNAOC) Regional Consultations for Asia-South Pacific, being held in Shanghai until tomorrow. The Shanghai event, titled “Harmony Through Diversity and Dialogue”, is jointly organized by the UNAOC and the UN Association of China.

Amma, the only spiritual leader invited to the conference, gave her speech on the subject of "Coexistence and Engagement Between Cultures."

Amma explained how globalization has affected our coexistence both positively and negatively, emphasizing that “coexistence is possible only when culture and modernization are in balance.” She warned that “efforts at coexistence fail when we claim ‘We are all one,’ but we disrespect each other’s ancient customs and traditions.” Proceeding to offer solutions, as well, Amma spoke, “we have to acknowledge the fact that even though we are one in essence, externally, we are different,” then she urged the assembly to respect diversity -- “An awareness of the need for coexistence amidst diversity is the only way to alleviate the suffering of others.”
Supporting her points with practical examples and suggestions based on decades of humanitarian work in culturally diverse regions, Amma invited everyone to contribute to the global conversation on coexistence by setting an example of respect and tolerance.
Amma also called for a balance of rights and respect. saying that “when we engage others with respect, understanding and acceptance, then we will be able to communicate at the level of the heart.”
Amma brought her speech to a conclusion by focusing on the power of love. “For the past 40 years, I have been communicating with people of all languages, races, colors, castes and religions, from the very poorest to the rich and famous, through the language of Love. There are no barriers for love. I have full faith in the transformational power of Love to unite all hearts.”
This was Amma’s first time visiting China. During the past three decades, Amma has conducted programs throughout the world, including the United States, South America, Europe, Canada, Africa, Japan, Australia, the UAE, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, Reunion Island and Russia.

We must get along with fellow society members to bring out changes. We must lead others to do what is necessary.
